Getting cheap rooms is a great way of saving while travelling, but I’ll let you in on a little secret. Everybody is trying to get cheap rooms. The best way to outwit everyone else is to put in the effort. Here are a few tips to help you try and get the lowest rate possible. For the purpose of this article I’m going to use Las Vegas as an example.
If you want to stay in a specific hotel like Caesars Palace then you will struggle to find a cheap room. If however you don’t mind where you stay on the strip you might find that the MGM works out 60% cheaper for that week. The main thing is that you don’t have to be flexible with your dates just be flexible where you are going to stay. If it’s four or five star on the strip and gets great reviews who cares what the name is when its only $50 a night.
I can’t stress this enough. If you search in google for whatever city you are staying in for “Discount website [city name]”. You’ll find a number of websites offering special discounts not available on travel websites. I ran this search for Vegas and the top answer was www.smartervegas.com/. On the home page there you are presented with literally hundreds of hotel specials extending to free meals and upgrades with rooms.
This is the standard route for most people. The best advice I can give here is to try and find a comparison website for comparison websites that you can trust. So websites that compare prices for sites like Expedia and booking.com as opposed to going to them sites themselves. Of all the ones I have found, the two I can recommend are www.trivago.com and www.tripadvisor.com. I feel Trivago offers the best prices, but tripadvisor offers the best reviews and advice.
This is one often overlooked. Hotel websites are growing wise to the comparison sites and are offering their own deals. These are often not picked up by travel sites. So once you have a short list on hotels you like check out their websites for any special deals. I found a great rate for the MGM Grand on the strip. When I went on the special offers section of their website they matched the price I had in my hand and offered 2 buffets per day as an added bonus.
Once you’ve done the steps above and have some great deals in hand phone the hotel and talk to them. Explain what you have found online and ask if they have any special in-house deal going on to either match or beat what you have online. By going to the hotel with a price and haggling to cut out the middle man you stand a chance of getting a decent deal.
